MEQUON, Wis. - The Rockford University football team (1-7, 0-5 NACC) lost a tough one, 41-27, on the road Saturday afternoon to the Concordia University Wisconsin Falcons (4-4, 2-3 NACC). Although the Regents came up short on the scoreboard, there were a lot of positive takeaways from the game. Rockford forced a season-high six turnovers, including intercepting four CUW passes. The Regents also tied a season-high with three touchdown passes. Additionally, Rockford had multiple individuals on both sides of the ball have career days.

  • The first big play of the day came courtesy of the RU defense on Concordia Wisconsin's first possession. Sophomore defensive back Garrick McGregor intercepted a CUW pass on Concordia's very first play from scrimmage and returned it to the Falcon 35-yard line, .
  • However, the RU offense went three-and-out. Gerardo Zamudio then pinned the Falcons at their own 5-yard with a well-placed punt.
  • Three plays later, the Regent defense came up with its second big play of the quarter. Rockford's Cody Minder recovered a CUW fumble at the Falcon 22-yard line, to give the Rockford offense excellent starting field position.
  • After a pair of incomplete passes, Christian Mazurkiewicz tossed his first of three touchdowns, this one a 22-yard strike to senior Kalan Miller. Zamudio's extra point was good, to give Rockford an early 7-0 lead.
  • Unfortunately, the lead was very short lived, as CUW returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a touchdown, to tie the game at 7-7.
  • Rockford's next big play came midway through the first quarter, when the Regents forced their third turnover of the day. With the Falcons driving and having a first and ten at the Regent 30-yard line, Jermaine Johnson intercepted a James Linn pass, to end the CUW threat.
  • However, the Falcons would get the ball right back after an RU three-and-out and take their first lead of the day. CUW needed just three plays to cover 55 yards and take a 14-7 lead.
  • The Falcon lead did not last long though, as Rockford needed just two plays to find the end zone. The Regents' drive began on the Falcon 31-yard line, following a nice kickoff return by Kalan Miller and a CUW penalty. Two plays later, Mazurkiewicz connected with Joey Owens on a 30-yard touchdown pass, to tie the game at 14-14.
  • Each of the next three possessions resulted in touchdowns, with the Falcons and Regents taking turns sharing the lead.
  • CUW struck first on a nine-play, 68-yard drive, to retake the lead at 20-14.
  • Rockford then went 62 yards on six plays to retake the lead at 21-20. The Regents did the majority of their damage via the passing game, accounting for 50 of the 62 yards through the air. Mazurkiewicz hit Joey Owens for a 34-yard pass play, before finding Kalan Miller on a 16-yard touchdown pass, to put the Regents back out in front.
  • The Falcons wasted little time retaking the lead, scoring just 2:18 later. Linn tossed his third touchdown of the half, to give his team a 27-21 advantage.
  • The score would remain the same until the closing seconds of the first half. Rockford's Jermaine Johnson intercepted his second pass of the half, to give his team the ball on the CUW side of the field. It took Rockford nine plays to cover 38 yards, capped of by a 5-yard LaVar Johnson Jr. touchdown run with 22 seconds left in the second quarter. The point after was no good, as the game entered the half tied at 27-27.
  • The RU defense made the first big play of the second half on the Falcons' opening possession. Jallen Bashford intercepted a Falcon pass and returned it to the CUW 39-yard line.
  • However, Rockford was unable to capitalize on the turnover, giving the ball right back to the Falcons.
  • The Falcons then went 81 yards on 15 plays, capped off by a 2-yard touchdown plunge on fourth-and-goal, to retake the lead at 34-27.
  • Rockford continued to fight and claw as the RU defense came up with yet another big play. Dylan Peterson both forced and recovered a fumble inside the red zone, to give the ball back to the Regent offense.
  • However, it was not meant to be, as the Regents were forced to punt the ball back to Concordia Wisconsin.
  • The Falcons then put the game away with a 12-play, 59-yard touchdown drive with less than four minutes remaining in the game.
  • Rockford was unable to score on its final possession of the day, giving the Falcons a 41-27 win.
