ROSCOE, Ill. - The Rockford University men's and women's cross country teams opened their season on Thursday afternoon at the Beloit Early Bird Meet. The men's team placed fourth while the women did not record a team score.
Sophomore Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) once again stole the show with his fourth place finish. This marks the second straight season that Devant has placed fourth at this particular meet. He was also once again the top NACC finisher with a time of 21:41.5 in the 6k race.
Fellow sophomores Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) and Cristan Newton (Shreveport, La.) each nabbed a top-20 finish placing twelfth and eighteenth respectively. Werkheiser sprinted across the finish line in 22:47.3 while Newton finished the race in 23:29.9.
Senior John Finley (Rockford, Ill.) and freshmen Nick Noel (Belvidere, Ill.) and Maxi Herrera-Herrera (Rockford, Ill.) were the final three participants for Rockford on the men's side. Finley finished twenty-second with a time of 23:52.1 while Noel and Herrera-Herra placed twenty-fourth and twenty-sixth with respective times of 23:59.5 and 24:07.3.
Sophomore Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.) was the lone woman to participate at the meet for Rockford. Buechner had a nice showing placing thirty-sixth with a time of 29:43.6
The RU cross country teams return to competition next Saturday, September 10 at the CUW Ken Wendt Classic. The meet has a scheduled start time of 11:00 AM.
