ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University volleyball team took to the court Wednesday night to face off against Mount Mary University. The Regents dominated from the very beginning and never looked back. RU won in three straight sets with scores of 25-13, 25-16, and 25-23.
During the first set the teams exchanged points until it was tied at 12, and RU took over from there. The Regents would go on a 7-0 run to make it 19-12 before allow the Blue Angels to score just once more before going on another run to close out the game. The Regents continued to showcase their strong play by taking the second set with a score of 25-16. The third set would be the closest of them all, but RU managed to hang on for the win. The score was tied at 23-23 before freshman Emily Johannes (Eau Claire, Wis.) sealed the game with the final two kills with assists coming off the hands of Kayla Barthels (Fort Worth, Texas).
The Rockford University volleyball team saw four players record at least 5 kills during the game. Johannes led the team with 10, while Jessica Diaz (Bolingbrook, Ill.) chalked up 8, and both Maddison Hiland (Bellevue, Iowa) and Kaylynne Terry (Streator, Ill.) tallied 6. Barthels helped organized the attack with 28 of the teams 33 assists on the night. On the defensive end RU also had 4 players with at least 5 digs. Jennifer Quintas (Rockford, Ill.) led the team with 8, while Barthels racked up 6 of her own, and both Diaz and Libby Malenchik (Rockford, Ill.) recording 5 of their own.
RU returns to the court on Friday, October 20 as they travel to Aurora. The match is scheduled for a 7 PM start time.
