GALESBURG, Ill. - The Rockford University volleyball team hit the road on Tuesday night to play its second match against the Knox College Prairie Fire in the past four days. Although the Regents played better this time around, unfortunately it was not enough as the Prairie Fire won in straight sets 25-16, 25-13, 25-23.
Following a difficult first two sets to open the match, Rockford gave Knox all it could handle in a hotly contested third set. The Regents jumped out in front 5-1 early in the third thanks in part to the stellar serving of Maddison Hiland (Bellevue, Iowa) and Kaylynne Terry (Streator, Ill.). The ladies would extend their lead to as many as 6 points midway through the set using a 6-1 run to take a 12-6 advantage. However, Rockford's lead evaporated quickly as the Prairie Fire promptly scored 8 straight points to move in front for the first time in the set at 14-12. The Prairie Fire's lead would hover around 3 points for the remainder of the match until Rockford made one final push in the closing moments. With Knox in front 24-21, Rockford erased two straight match points to pull back within 1 at 24-23. Unfortunately it was not enough as Knox closed out the Regents on the very next point for a 3-0 win.
Individually Rockford was led by the trio of Jennifer Quintas (Rockford, Ill.), Jessica Diaz (Bolingbrook, Ill.) and Kayla Barthels (Fort Worth, Texas). Quintas had a nice evening leading the Regents with 13 digs, 2 kills and 2 assists. Diaz finished the match with a team-high 5 kills, 5 digs and 2 assists, while Barthels tallied a team-high 12 assists and 9 digs.
The ladies return to the court on Wednesday, September 20 for their home opener against Wisconsin Lutheran College. The match has a scheduled start time of 7:00 p.m. in the Seaver Center.
