ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University volleyball team returned to action today to take on Concordia University Chicago in their home opener for the season. The Regents were looking for their first victory of the year. Rockford played very well multiple times in the match but were unable to close out each set, falling 3-1 with a victory in the second set, by the finals of 26-24, 25-19, 28-26, and 25-20.
The Regents began the first set on fire taking the lead immediately and holding a lead as high as seven points, at 21-14. Unfortunately, Rockford could only muster three more points dropping the first set 26-24. The team totaled 12 kills and had only 4 errors, en route to a .250 hitting percentage. Even after the heartbreaking defeat in the first set, Rockford responded by jumping out to a lead again. However, in this set the Regents did not allow the Cougars to get back into the game finishing them off with a 25-19 victory. The team totaled an outstanding 11 kills on 23 attempts with only 3 errors, leading to a hitting percentage of .348. The performance was the highest of the season in any set for the team.
In the third set Rockford and Concordia were locked in a stalemate throughout. The set had many lead changes, with both teams staying within two points of each other. Unfortunately, the Regents were unable to capture the victory falling 28-26. In the fourth set, Rockford fell behind and could not claw back into the game, falling by the final of 25-20. Ultimately, Rockford fell in four sets, 3-1.
Leading the Regents on the day were senior Liberty Hartman (Freeport, Ill.) totaling a career-high 21 kills on 44 total attempts. She totaled an outstanding .341 hitting percentage for the match. Hartman also had a double-double adding 11 digs with 3 block assists and one block solo. Senior Taylor Rossi (Ingleside, Ill.) also turned in an impressive performance tallying a season-high 36 assists. Rossi added 6 kills, 9 digs and 2 block assists. Alex Storey (Dexter, Mich.) added a double-double with 13 kills, 12 digs and 3 service aces.
The Rockford University volleyball team returns to action Thursday, September 22 against Knox College at the Seaver Center with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
