CHICAGO, Ill. - The Rockford University women's volleyball team concluded its eight-match road trip to open the season on Saturday with a pair of games against Illinois Tech and St. Mary's (Ind.). Rockford started off playing well in each of the two matches but eventually fell by a final score of 3-0 in both.
Rockford's first match of the day came against Illinois Tech. The Regents got off to fast start in the opening set jumping out to a quick 4-0 lead. Rockford maintained its lead until partway through the set when the Scarlet Hawks went on a 6-2 run to take their first lead of the match. Although the set remained close, Rockford was never able to regain the lead and fell 25-20. Despite the loss Rockford played very well in set as the Regent tallied 11 kills on 26 attack attempts with only 5 errors. However, the second and third sets did not go well as the Regents found themselves down by 10 points early in both and ultimately fell by final scores of 25-14 and 25-7.
Sophomore Alex Storey (Dexter, Mich.) and freshman August Guest (Lahaina, Hawaii) led the offensive charge for Rockford. Storey tallied a team-high 8 kills along with 7 digs and 1 ace. Guest recorded 6 kills and had 5 digs.
Rockford's second match of the day against St. Mary's followed a nearly identical pattern as the opening match. The Regents began the match on a 5-0 run off the serve of Kayla Barthels (Fort Worth, Tex.) to grab the early lead. The score would remain close until midway through the set when St. Mary's used a 7-0 run to take a 19-12 advantage. However following a well used timeout, Rockford responded with a 5-0 run of its own to pull back within two at 19-17. Unfortunately, the Regents were unable to complete the comeback as St. Mary's escaped the first set winning 25-22. The second and third sets were a bit of struggle for Rockford as the Regents found themselves down big in both and eventually dropped each by final scores of 25-13 and 25-10.
Storey and Guest again were the offensive leaders for the Regents with 6 and 5 kills respectively. Barthels also played well tallying 12 assists in the match after recording 19 assists against Illinois Tech earlier in the day.
The RU women's volleyball team returns to the court on Wednesday, September 21 for its home opener against Concordia University Chicago. The match has a scheduled start time of 7:00 PM in the Seaver Center.
