Jared Johnson and Nicole Melson Break the RU Weight Throw Record

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. - The Rockford University indoor track and field teams continued their record-breaking ways on Saturday as two more school records fell at the non-scoring UW-Platteville Select. In his first meet of the season, Jared Johnson (Miami, Fla.) obliterated his own school record in the weight throw by nearly a meter with a distance of 12.70 meters to finish 14th. On the women's side it was Nicole Melson (Harvard, Ill.) who broke the RU record in the weight throw for the second straight week. Her throw of 12.39 meters was 0.02 meters farther than her previous school record and was good enough for a 12th place finish. Both Johnson and Melson each also participated in the shot put event. Johnson finished 15th with a distance of 11.79 meters, while Nelson took 20th with a throw of 8.48 meters. 

Rockford's two highest finishes came on the men's side in the 4x200 meter relay and the 4x400 meter relay. The 4x200 meter team of Tyrece Ahrens (Kankakee, Ill.), Nathan Alldritt (Winnebago, Ill.), Jesus Campos (Chicago, Ill.) and Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.) finished in third place with a time of 1:37.54. However, the top finish of the day belonged to the 4x400 meter team of Tyrece Ahrens, Jesus Campos, Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) and Joe Werkheiser who crossed the finish line in 3:47.89 to place second.

The majority of the Regents who ran on the relay teams also participated in at least one additional event. Christian Devant set a new personal best in the high jump where he placed sixth with a height of 1.68 meters. Joe Werkheiser set a new personal best time in the 800 meter race where he crossed the finish line in 2:09.17 to finish eighth. Werkheiser then took 15th in the long jump with a distance of 4.88 meters. Both Nathan Alldritt and Jesus Campos ran in the 60 meter dash. Alldritt took 15th with a time of 7.51 seconds and Campos took 16th with a time of 7.52 seconds. Alldritt then finished 11th in the long jump with a distance of 5.67 meters.

Both Nick Thomas (Winslow, Ariz.) and Bailey Beard (Rockford, Ill.) took part in a trio of events at the UW-Platteville Select. Thomas set personal bests finishing 16th and 19th in the long jump and shot put events with respective distances of 4.83 meters and 10.59 meters. He also ran in the 60 meter dash where he crossed the finish line in 8.32 seconds to finish 27th. Beard's top finish came in the high jump where he took 7th with a height of 1.53 meters. He then ran in both the 400 and 800 meter races where he finished 15th and 13th with times of 59.76 seconds and 2:17.81. 

Junior Jonathan Ponce Cuiriz (Kewanee, Ill.) performed well in the throwing events for the Regents. Ponce Cuiriz took 18th in the shot put with a throw of 10.68 meters and 22nd in the weight throw with a distance of 10.75 meters.

Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.) and Katrina Kopfhamer (Portage, Wis.) both had a good day for the women's team. Buechner finished 15th in the 400 meter race with a time of 1:10.80 and 18th in the 200 meter run with a time of 30.26 seconds. In her first meet of the season, Kopfhamer finished 18th in the weight throw with a distance of 10.73 meters and 25th in the shot put with a throw of 7.63 meters. 

The RU indoor track and field teams return to action in two weeks on Saturday, February 10 at the UW-Platteville Invite.
