MONMOUTH, Ill. - The RU men's and women's track and field teams returned to competition at the Fighting Scot Invite this Saturday following a week off. Although this was a non-scoring meet, Rockford still had multiple excellent individual performances. Some of the highlights include one school record falling along with numerous personal and season best efforts.
Freshman Katrina Kopfhamer (Portage, Wis.) turned in a pair of stellar performances in both the weight throw and shot put events. Kopfhamer's best effort came in the weight throw event where she broke the RU school record by 0.81 meters with a throw of 11.10 meters to finish in 15th place. She then completed her afternoon with a 20th place finish in the shot put with a throw of 8.07 meters.
Junior Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.) led Rockford in the running events recording a pair of season best times. Buechner finished in 17th place in the 60 meter dash and was just 0.03 seconds off breaking her own school record when she crossed the finish line in 8.42 seconds. In her other race of the afternoon, Buechner placed 24th in the 200 meter with a season best time of 28.81 seconds.
The men's team was led by Justin Christiansen (Rockford, Ill.) who had the top overall finish of any Regent. Christiansen placed 6th in the high jump with a season best height of 1.84 meters. He also took 15th in the long jump with a distance of 5.56 meters.
Sophomore Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) and freshman Nick Noel (Belvidere, Ill.) were Rockford's top two performers in the running events. Devant led Rockford in both the 800 meter and 1 mile races despite this being his first meet of the season. The sophomore placed 15th in the mile with a time of 4:51.68 and 19th in the 800 meter with a time of 2:17.12. Noel also ran well, placing 20th in the 800 meter with a personal best time of 2:19.51 and 21st in the mile crossing the finish line in 4:58.59.
The duo of Jared Johnson (Miami, Fla.) and Jonathan Ponce Cuiriz (Kewanee, Ill.) led the RU men in the throwing events. Johnson led the way in both the shot put and weight throw events placing 13th and 18th with respective distances of 11.29 meters and 10.80 meters. Ponce Cuiriz set a new personal best in the weight throw with a distance of 10.01 meters to finish in 22nd place. He also turned in a 20th place finish in the shot put event with a throw of 9.70 meters.
The RU indoor track and field teams return to action next Saturday, February 18 at the Margaret Bradley Invite.
