LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University women's soccer team took to the field Friday evening to face off against Mount Mary University, as well as to honor its seniors. The game would be a defensive match for much of the first half as shots were in favor of the Blue Angels 7-5. Neither team went into halftime with anything to show on the scoreboard. RU dominated the game in the second as they outshot Mount Mary 8-0, and went on to win its final home game of the season with a score of 1-0.
The first and only goal of the game would not come until 12 minutes into the second half. A foul by MMU 30 yards out was all the Regents needed to seal the game. Freshman Erys Rivera (Belvidere, Ill.) lined up to take the free kick and sent a nice ball into the box, which connected with the head of senior teammate Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) who placed the ball beautifully in the bottom left corner of the net. That goal would be enough to clinch the game as Collins recorded her 4th game winner on the season. The defensive unit as whole played spectacular. Freshman goalie Drew Garcia (Victoria, Texas) stopped all 5 of her shots faced, en route to her 3rd shutout on the year. The RU defense played very well in the second as they did not allow a single shot to the Blue Angels.
The Rockford University women's soccer team takes to the road to wrap up its 2017 campaign as they face off against Lincoln Christian on Wednesday, October 25. The match is scheduled for 4 PM.
