LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University women's soccer team took on Lakeland University Sunday afternoon. The two teams were held scoreless in the first half. The Regents would come out on top with a final score of 1-0.
The Regents were outshot in the game 18-6, but it is a credit to the effort put forth by the defense and freshman goalie Drew Garcia (Victoria, Texas). Garcia saved all ten of the shots she faced, including two spectacular saves. The first was a shot she ran back to dive, and stop the ball right on the goal line. The second was a shot that was going to drop into the far corner that she managed to get a finger on to tip the ball out of bounds. Garcia helped lead the defense, while earning her second career shutout. It would not be until the 60 minute mark where a handball in the box would give RU the chance to take the lead. The Regents did just that as Erin Disanti (Rockford, Ill.) capitalized on the penalty kick, which would end up being the game winner.
The Rockford University women's soccer team returns to action on Monday, October 16 as they head to Marian. The match is scheduled for 7 PM.
