LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University women's soccer team took to the field Sunday afternoon against Alverno College. The two teams went into halftime with plenty of chances but nothing to show for it. In the second half the Regents came out strong and secured a win, with a final of 2-1.
Both of the teams had scoring opportunities in the first half but were unable to capitalize. The main reason being the stellar play of the goalies on each side. Drew Garcia (Victoria,Texas) of RU had 7 saves in the first half, and 11 in total. Garcia showed off her instinctive play making ability stopping an Alverno breakaway. It did not take long into the second half for the scoring to open up. Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) dribbled the ball through the box and found teammate Erys Rivera (Belvidere, Ill.) waiting on the six, who finished it in the back of the net to give the Regents the lead just 7 minutes into the half. The duo of Collins and Rivera struck again just 38 seconds later when Rivera sent a nice pass to Collins as she found the back of net, for what would prove to be the game winning goal. The Inferno were able to capitalize on one of its chances bringing the game within one with just over 16 minutes left in the game, but it would not be enough. RU was able to play well on defense the rest of the way to secure the win.
The Rockford University women's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, September 30 when they take on Grace Bible at Sportscore 2. The match is scheduled for a 3 PM start time.
