LOVES PARK, Ill. - The Rockford University women's soccer team hoped to continue its winning ways this Saturday as they faced off against the Illinois College Lady Blues. After trailing 1-0 in the first half, the Regents were able to find the back of the net in the second. However,it would not be enough as RU ended up losing the match by a final score of 3-2.
RU started the game out strong showing flashes of promise in the offensive end. For the majority of the first half it turned out to be a defensive battle as both team fought back-and-forth with nothing to show for it. Eventually in the 40th minute, Mackenzie Bedgood of Illinois College, scored her first of three goals in the game. It would not be until the 65th minute that a spectacular shot from Erys Rivera (Belvidere, Ill.) would notch it at one. Rivera saw her opportunity as she struck the ball from 25 yards out, hitting the crossbar and passing over the goal line. It was not long after that Bedgood completed her hat-trick by scoring off a free kick in the 69th, and then again on a header from a corner kick in the 71st minute. Rivera would finish off her brace by having another beautiful goal in the 77th minute to bring it within one. Rivera again saw her chance with the goalie playing off her line, as she struck the ball this time from 30 yards out dropping it right over the keeper. RU had its chances but could not complete the comeback.
The Rockford University Regents look to have a quick turn around as they suit up at Sportscore 2 on Sunday September 10 against MacMurray College. The game is scheduled for a 3PM start time, following the Rockford men's game at 1PM.
