Regents Drop Hard Fought Battle With Raiders

ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's basketball returned to action today to take MSOE on senior day at the Seaver Center. The Regents were celebrating three seniors on their roster and attempting to send them off with a victory. Unfortunately, Rockford was unable to pull out a hard fought battle, falling by the final of 56-52. 

The Regents wasted no time to begin the first period as they jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead as Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) and Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.) led the charge with 4 points each. The team's traded baskets for the rest of the quarter as Rockford took an 18-10 lead into the second period. In the next period Getzelman converted an old fashioned and-one, with a layup and a made free throw, to take a 21-10 lead. After MSOE fought all the way back to take the lead, Rockford was able to retake the lead with another and-one for with a layup and made free throw by Getzelman. RU led MSOE 32-31 at halftime. May and Getzelman led the Regents with 11 points each.

In the third period, Rockford jumped out of the gates with a quick 9-1 run to take a 41-32 advantage with 5:34 remaining. May led the scoring charge with 4 points. The Raiders came back to narrow their deficit to 45-40 at the end of the third period. The Raiders went on an 11-3 run to begin the final quarter and take a 51-48 lead with 4:38 remaining. Nicole Silvers (Byron, Ill.) answered with a three-point basket to tie the game back at 51-51 with 3:39 remaining in the game. After MSOE hit their next basket they did not surrender the lead again. Rockford fell by the final of 56-52. The Raiders shot 44.2% and the Regents shot 37.7% from the field. 

Mallorie Getzelman finished the game scoring 16 points and grabbing 5 rebounds in he final game in a Regent uniform. Getzelman ended her career with over 1,100 points and sits in tenth place on the school's all-time scoring list. She finished third in the NACC in points per game (19.7). 

Leading the Regents for the game was Taylor May. She recorded 16 points with 8 rebounds and 4 steals. May finished the season sixth in the NACC in points per game (17.6). Talayah Gordon Scott (Rockford, Ill.) and Gris Mendoza (Rockford, Ill.) each played in their final games in a Regent uniform.

The RU women's basketball team finished the season with 8 victories, 5 more than last season. They also finished in a tie for seventh in the NACC, improving from 12th last season.
