ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University women's basketball team returned to action tonight to take on Alverno College in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents came in four game behind the Inferno in the NACC standings. Unfortunately, Rockford was unable to beat Alverno falling by the final of 84-68.
After an administrative technical foul was called for a clock malfunction, which led to two points for the Inferno, the Regents scored nine straight points. Rockford had taken the lead 9-2 with eight minutes remaining in the opening quarter. Taylor May (East Moline, Ill.) led the scoring run with 4 points. For the final eight minutes both team traded baskets until Alverno hit a three-point basket to narrow their deficit to 19-16.
For much of the second quarter the lead hovered around five points until Katlyn Fiorucci (Rockford, Ill.) drilled a three-point basket to give Rockford their largest lead, 34-26, with three minutes remaining in the period. Unfortunately, the Inferno were able to finish the half on a 9-4 run to close the gap. Rockford led 38-35 at the half. Leading the Regents at halftime was May with 18 points. Rockford shot 51.7% and Alverno shot 42.4% from the floor.
In the third quarter the Inferno were able to take the lead from the Regents, 46-44, with just under six minutes remaining in the half. After Mallorie Getzelman (Byron, Ill.) was able to knot the score at 46 after two free throws, Alverno took the lead and never looked back. Rockford trailed at the end of the quarter 65-55. Unfortunately, the fourth quarter did not get any better for the Regents. They fell behind by as many as 17 points in the final period. Ultimately, Rockford fell by the final of 84-68.
Leading the Regents for the game were Mallorie Getzelman who scored 29 points and had 4 rebounds. She shot 11-of-20 from the field. Taylor May posted 24 points with 6 rebounds and 5 assists. Tajanae Key (Glendale Heights, Ill.) grabbed a team-high 9 rebounds.
The Rockford University women's basketball team returns to action Saturday, February 11 to take on Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 2 p.m.
