ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University softball team returned to action today to take on Alverno College on Senior Day at Smith Athletic Field. The Regents honored their three seniors and attempted to give them wins to end their career. Rockford was able to fight back after a tough loss in game one to earn the split in game two. The finals of the games were RU losing 6-3 and then winning 8-3.
In game one Alverno jumped out to the early 3-0 lead in the top of the first. However, Rockford was able to respond with a run to pull their deficit down to 3-1. The run came when Brooke Burris (Galatia, Ill.) hit an RBI groundout to bring in Lisa Blakeley-Snyder (Winnebago, Ill.). Once again the Inferno added three runs in the second inning to take a 6-1 lead. The Regents were able to manufacture two runs across on a wild pitch and a stolen base. Unfortunately, they were unable to add anymore runs in the game falling by the final of 6-3.
In game two Rockford was able to take the big lead in the first inning collecting five runs. The scoring began when Lynn Blakeley-Snyder (Winnebago, Ill.) roped an RBI single up the middle to drive in Lisa Blakeley-Snyder. A few batter later Taylor Pilarczyk (Chicago, Ill.) hit a two-run single up the middle to bring in Brittany Bihun (Schaumburg, Ill.) and Lynn Blakeley-Snyder. Later, Burris drove a two-run single into center field to drive in Pilarczyk and Nicole McCabe (Brookfield, Wis.). After the Regents held the Inferno scoreless in the second they added three more runs in bottom of the second. The runs came when Lynn Blakeley-Snyder hit an RBI groundout to plate Stefaney Kenworthy (Veedersburg, Ind.). Their next run came off of an error and an RBI groundout from Abigail Wellwood (Rockford, Ill.). The Regents took the commanding 8-0 lead after the inning. Alverno scored three runs and could not add anymore as Rockford won by the final of 8-3.
Pitching in game one was Brooke Burris who threw all 7 innings allowing 6 runs and 5 earned. In game two Stefaney Kenworthy threw all 7 innings allowing 3 runs, 2 earned, while striking out 3 batters. Kenworthy earned her fifth win of the season with the terrific performance.
Leading the Regents offensively on the day were Brittany Bihun who went 3-for-8 with with 2 runs scored. Brooke Burris went 3-for-7 with 3 RBI's. Lynn Blakeley-Snyder had 1 hit, 2 RBI's, and 2 walks on the day. Lisa Blakeley-Snyder had 2 hits on the day. Stefaney Kenworthy went 2-for-4 in the second game.
The RU softball team concluded their season today. The team improved from the prior season earning two more victories in the NACC and three more overall.
