NAPLES, Fla. - It was a tough final day in Florida for the Regents softball team as the ladies dropped their remaining two games 9-2 to Rivier and 6-0 to Kenyon. The Regents were only able to muster eight hits and two runs in the two games combined and were shutout for the second time this season.
The opening game of the day was close for the first few innings before Rivier began to take control late. The Raiders took advantage of a pair of Rockford errors in the opening two frames as they jumped out to a 3-0 lead. However just as they have done multiple times already this season, the Regents responded with two runs in the bottom half of the second to pull back within a run at 3-2. Sophomore's Taylor Pilarczyk (Chicago, Ill.) and Shannon LeGath (Sturtevant, Wis.) began the rally with a pair of walks, giving Rockford two base runners with just one out. Nicole McCabe (Brookfield, Ill.) then drove in the Regents' first run of the day on an RBI groundout to pull her team back with two. One batter later, Abigail Wellwood (Rockford, Ill.) made it a one-run game as she laced a single into center field to score LeGath. Unfortunately things began to deteriorate over the next four innings as Rockford committed five errors leading to six unanswered runs and a 9-2 Rivier victory.
Abigail Wellwood and Taylor Pilarczyk lead the Rockford offense accounting for three of the Regents' four hits. Wellwood went 2-for-3 at the plate, while Pilarczyk was 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and a run scored.
Rockford was shutout 6-0 by the Kenyon College Lords in its final game in Florida. Although the Regents were able to get runners on base multiple times, Rockford was never able to come up with a clutch hit. Stefaney Kenworthy (Veedersburg, Ind.) and Brittany Bihun (Schaumburg, Ill.) seemed to get the offense off to a good start with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the first inning. However, the Regents were unable to take advantage as the Lords wiggled their way out of the jam and held onto the 1-0 lead. Kenyon was essentially able to put the game out of reach in the middle innings as the Lords scored a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The Regents did however have one final chance to get on the board in the seventh as Wellwood and Caitlin Eiben (Racine, Wis.) began the frame by reaching base via an error and walk. However once again the Lords did their best Houdini Act and escaped without surrendering any runs to seal the win.
Brittany Bihun was the lone Regent to tally a multi-hit performance in the game as she went 2-for-3 at the plate.
The Rockford University softball team returns to action on Saturday, March 18 for its home opener against Beloit College. First pitch is set for noon at the Smith Athletic Field.
