Track and Field Sets Five School Records at Benedictine Relays

LISLE, Ill. - It was a memorable two days for the RU men's and women's outdoor track and field teams at the Benedictine Relays. The Regents broke four school records and established a fifth in perhaps one of the best meets in recent memory. In addition to the handful of records that fell, multiple individuals had career days setting new personal or season-bests.  

The top overall finish of the day went to the men's DMR team of Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.), Bailey Beard (Rockford, Ill.)Anders-James Wermuth (Spring Green, Wis.) and Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.). The guys vanquished the competition winning the event with a time of 10:59.64, which demolished the school record by nearly 25 seconds. 

Individually though the weekend belonged to freshman Nathan Alldritt (Winnebago, Ill.) who broke a trio of Rockford University records. Alldritt began by breaking his own record in the pole vault with a height of 4.10 meters. The freshman then broke the school record in the long jump with distance of 6.27 meters. He concluded his record-breaking meet by setting a new school record in the javelin throw with a distance of 38.60 meters.

Sophomore Jared Johnson (Miami, Fla.) had some excellent performances for the Regents in the throwing events. Johnson set a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 11.47 meters to finish in 28th place. He also led the pack of Regents in the discuss with a throw of 35.18 meters. 

Chris Wilson-Poston (Carlock, Ill.) also had a memorable meet over the weekend. Wilson-Poston set a trio of personal bests in the long jump, 100 meter and 200 meter dashes. In the long jump Wilson-Poston leapt a distance of 6.06 meters, and then finished the 100 meter and 200 meter dashes in 11.58 seconds and 23.27 seconds respectively.

Senior John Finley (Rockford, Ill.) was the top Regent in the distance events. Finley turned in a season-best performance in the 1500 meter race crossing the finish line in 4:38.11. He also ran in the 10,000 meter race for the first time ever and placed ninth with a time of 36:42.35. 

Sophomore Joe Werkheiser also had a great day individually on top of his performance in the DMR. Werkheiser set a new personal best in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:02.71 and set a new personal best in the 200 meter event crossing the finish line in 23.51.

Justin Christiansen (Rockford, Ill.) and Nick Thomas (Winslow, Ariz.) narrowly missed school records as well. Christiansen recorded a height of 1.85 meters in the high jump, which was just 0.05 meters off his own school record. Thomas did break the previous school record in the javelin with a throw of 38.29 meters, only to have Alldritt break his record later in the day.

The top overall finish for the women's team came in the 4x200 meter relay. The team of Kayla Barthels (Fort Worth, Texas)Maddy Pearson (Peru, Ill.)Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.) and Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.) placed third in the event and established the Rockford University school record with a time of 1:54.93. 

Individually Nicole Melson (Harvard, Ill.) had a very impressive day with one personal best and one season-best performance. Melson set a new personal best in the hammer throw with a distance of 31.06 meters and a season-best in the discus with a throw of 26.46 meters. She also had the top overall performance for Rockford in the shot put with a throw of 9.15 meters. 

Maddy Pearson participated in five individual events over the weekend. Pearson placed 30th in the javelin with a throw of 22.15 meters, 35th in the hammer with a throw of 30.82 meters, 35th in the discus with a distance of 26.04 meters, 39th in the shot put with a throw of 8.89 meters and 44th in the long jump with a leap of 3.88 meters. 

Lexie Collins set a new personal best in the 400 meter race crossing the finish line in 1:06.11. This was on top of her helping establish the RU school record in the 4x200 meter relay. 

Kayla Barthels and Virginia Reed (Rockford, Ill.) had the top overall performances for the Regents in the jumping events. Barthels placed 20th in the triple jump with a distance of 8.23 meters and 28th in the long jump with a distance of 4.74 meters. Reed set a new season-best and led Rockford in the triple jump with a distance of 9.14 meters.

The RU track and field teams return to competition next Friday, April 21 at the University of Dubuque Invite.
