KENOSHA, Wis. - The Rockford University men's and women's indoor track and field teams placed eighth and ninth out of ten teams at the NACC Indoor Championships on Saturday. The men's team combined to score ten points while the women's team finished with two points. Individually though the Regents had multiple excellent performances as Rockford broke two school records, tied another and set numerous personal bests.
The first school record to fall came early on in the day in the women's weight throw. Katrina Kopfhamer (Portage, Wis.) shattered her own school record in the event with a distance of 11.72 meters to finish in 11th place. She also participated in the shot put where she placed 17th with a throw of 7.69 meters.
The other RU record that fell occurred in the women's 4x400 meter relay. The team of Maddy Pearson (Peru, Ill.), Lexie Collins (Earlville, Ill.), Kayla Barthels (Fort Worth, Texas) and Jamie Buechner (Island Lake, Ill.) obliterated the old RU record by nearly 15 seconds as they crossed the finish line in 4:38.65 to place seventh.
Jamie Buechner continued her stellar day with a pair of outstanding individual performances. Buechner tied the school record in the 55 meter dash placing 14th and crossing the finish line in 7.78 seconds. She then set a new personal best in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.18 to finish in 13th place.
Maddy Pearson also participated in the shot put and weight throw events for the first time this season. Person placed 15th in the shot put and 17th in the weight throw with distances of 9.15 and 9.85 meters respectively.
Lexie Collins also ran in the 400 meter race where she won her heat and finished 10th overall with a time of 1:10.72.
Kayla Barthels and Virginia Reed (Rockford, Ill.) were the lone Regents on Saturday to participate in the jumping events. Barthels finished 10th in the long jump with a distance of 4.74 meters, which is just 0.01 of a meter off her own school record. Reed finished 12th in the triple jump and 17th in the long jump with respective distances of 9.49 and 4.19 meters.
The top individual finish of the day belonged to freshman Nathan Alldritt (Winnebago, Ill.) who took 5th in the pole vault with an impressive height of 3.95 meters. Alldritt was also a member of Rockford's 4x400 meter relay team along with Joe Werkheiser (Lena, Ill.), Christian Devant (Winnebago, Ill.) and Nick Noel (Belvidere, Ill.). The group took ninth in the event as they crossed the finish line in 3:44.63.
The top overall finish of the day belonged to Rockford's distance medley relay team of Joe Werkheiser, Christian Devant, Nick Noel and John Finley (Rockford, Ill.). The Regents took 4th place in the race with a time of 11:24.30.
The trio of Jared Johnson (Miami, Fla.), Chase Gray (Alton, Ill.) and Jonathan Ponce Cuiriz (Kewanee, Ill.) led the Regents in the throwing events. Johnson finished in 16th place in the shot put and 20th place in the weight throw with respective distances of 11.34 meters and 11.04 meters. Gray set a new personal best in the shot put with a throw of 10.83 meters to place 19th and finished in 25th in the weight throw with a distance of 9.27 meters. Ponce Cuiriz finished in 23rd in both the shot put and weight throw events with throws of 10.16 and 10.18 meters.
Cristan Newton (Shreveport, La.) ran very well at the NACC Championships setting a pair of new personal bests. Newton placed 16th in the mile run with a time of 5:02.88 and finished 23rd in the 3000 meter race crossing the finish line in 10:19.26.
Senior Justin Christiansen (Rockford, Ill.) finished in the top 15 in a trio of events on Saturday. His best performance came in the high jump where he placed 8th with a height of 1.83 meters. Christiansen also participated in the 55 meter hurdles and the pole vault for the first time this season. He finished in 11th in the pole vault with a height of 3.35 meters and 15th in the 55 meter hurdles with a time of 9.46 seconds.
