Mount Vernon, Iowa - The Rockford University men's soccer team traveled to face the Cornell College Rams on Saturday. The Regents came out hot as they controlled most of the play in the first half. RU entered the second half up 2-0 hoping to get its first win of the 2017 campaign. The Rams ruined the Regents chances, as they scored three goals in the final 16 minutes, winning the game by a score of 3-2.
The Regents played well in the first half as Erik Manriquez (Rockford, Ill.) placed the ball perfectly in the top left corner of the net, scoring his first of the season to give RU the lead. Manriquez was again effective on the offensive end as he crossed in a ball for Todd Alberts (Davenport, Iowa) resulting in a goal for the Regents, as well as Alberts first of the year. The second half was a different story for RU. Cornell College dominated the offensive side of the ball as they outshot Rockford University 18 to 1. The pressure the Rams applied was enough to wear away the Regent defense allowing them to score. The first two goals for Cornell came at 74:03 and 85:41 tieing the game at 2. The Regents hoped to hang on to force overtime, where they could regroup and devise a way to pull out a win. Unfortunately, with just 62 ticks left on the clock the Rams scored, completing the comeback and knocking the Regents to an 0-3-1 record.
The Rockford University men's team gets right back to action on Sunday September 10 as they host Webster University at Sportscore 2. The match is scheduled for a start time of 1PM.
