CARLINVILLE, Ill. - The Rockford University men's soccer team opened its 2017 season with a 2-2 tie in double overtime on the road against Blackburn College. The Regents outshot the Beavers 25-12 including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Rockford struck first scoring less than four minutes into the match when senior Jonathan Hernandez (Chicago, Ill.) found the back of the net assisted by Brandon Oeltjenbruns (Arvada, Colo.) to give the Regents a 1-0 lead. The match remained 1-0 until the 44th minute when the Beavers scored their first goal of the season to knot it at 1-1 heading into halftime. The Regents would again strike first in the second half when freshman Gaige Cervantes (Rockford, Ill.) scored his first collegiate goal off an assist from Hernandez as Rockford lept back in front 2-1. However, just like in the first half, Blackburn would respond in the closing minutes with a goal of its own to tie the match and force overtime. Despite holding an 8-3 edge in shots in the overtime periods, Rockford was unable to score as the match finished in a 2-2 tie.
Senior Jonathan Hernandez had an excellent day for the Regents taking a trio of shots with two of them coming on goal. He was heavily involved in both RU goals, scoring one and assisting on the other. Freshman Gaige Cervantes took just one shot, but made it count scoring the Regents other goal in today's match.
The RU men's soccer team returns to action on Saturday, September 2 for its home opener against Fontbonne University. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. at Wedgbury Stadium.
