ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University men's soccer team returned to action today to take on Marian University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents were searching for their second NACC victory of the season. Rockford was shorthanded missing two starting midfielders, but played outstanding defense to earn a draw. The game ended after two overtimes with a final of 1-1.
Rockford and Marian came into the game with one game separating them in the NACC standings. Throughout the game each team showed how evenly matched they were as the first half ended in a 0-0 tie. Sophomore Anthony Beck (Fishers, Ind.) had an outstanding first half, and game, as he saved four shots. In the second half, the Regents played great defense time and time again holding the Sabres to only one goal on 15 shots. Rockford had their best scoring opportunity come in the 71st minute when Joseph Romano (Norridge, Ill.) scored his first career goal off of a beautiful free kick from Kyler McCleland (Northglenn, Colo.). Rockford took the lead with the goal 1-0. Marian responded with their own goal in the 78th minute off of a rebound off the crossbar. The goal brought the game to a tie at 1-1 and was the final goal of the game. The match was a final after two overtimes. The Regents held the Sabres to only one goal on 29 shots.
Playing well for Rockford on the day were Beck, who had 13 saves on 14 attempts. He continually kept the team in the game by making excellent saves. Romano led the team with 2 shots, 1 coming on goal, and the only goal for the Regents. McCleland recorded his second assist of the season.
The Rockford University men's soccer team returns to action Wednesday, September 12 against Concordia University Wisconsin at the Seaver Center with a scheduled start time of 4 p.m.
