ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University men's basketball team enters the final week of the regular season right in the thick of the race for one of the final two spots in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference Tournament. With just two games remaining, the Regents trail both Concordia University Wisconsin and Marian University by a single game for the fifth and sixth seeds. Rockford will have a chance to vault into a tie for at least one of the remaining places as the Regents begin their week on Wednesday night at Concordia University Wisconsin before concluding their regular season on Saturday at Dominican University. If Rockford wins both of its remaining two games, the Regents will still need help to secure a spot in tournament. The Regents will either need Concordia Wisconsin to lose its remaining game on Saturday at Concordia Chicago or Marian to lose one of its remaining two games at Lakeland or at Aurora.
The Regents enter Wednesday's tilt on a bit of a hot streak winning six of their last nine games including two straight. Conversely the Falcons are 5-4 over their last nine games but have lost three of their last four. However, Rockford will need to be at its best to defeat the Falcons, as Concordia Wisconsin has won nine of the last ten meetings between the two schools including a 91-88 win earlier in the season. It was the trio of Jake Jurss, Jordan Johnson and Josh Hau who did the majority of the damage for the Falcons in the previous meeting, as the three combined to score 59 of the Falcons' 91 points on exactly 55% shooting. Rockford on the other hand used a much more balanced attack as all five starters scored at least 10 points led by a game-high 23 points from Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.). This time around though the Regents will feature a slightly different group of starters led by junior Tony Diemer, senior Trae Blumhorst (Mendota, Ill.) and freshmen Brandon Emerick (Elkhart, Ind.) and Kevin Diemer (Rockford, Ill.). Tony Diemer has been one of the top scorers in the NACC all season long averaging 17.3 points per game, sixth most in the conference, while Trae Blumhorst has been a solid all-around player the entire season averaging 12.1 points, 6.4 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.5 blocks and 1.2 steals. However, since the two teams last met in December, Brandon Emerick and Kevin Diemer both seem to have really hit their stride on the court. Over the past ten games, Kevin Diemer has tallied six double-doubles while averaging 14.9 points and 9.5 rebounds. Brandon Emerick has been just as effective over his last eleven games averaging 14.6 points, 3.1 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.0 assists.
