ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University men's basketball team returned to action today to take on Edgewood College in a crucial Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents were trying to keep pace for the NACC tournament. Rockford came in two games behind of the top six in the NACC standings. Ultimately, the Regents were able to fight off the Eagles prevailing by the final of 99-86
Edgewood jumped out to an early 10-4 lead just over two minutes into the first half. The Eagles had extended their lead to 32-24 with nine minutes remaining in the half. Edgewood came out on fire knocking down five three-point baskets in the first nine minutes. After the Eagles had taken a 39-26 lead, the Regents responded with an 18-0 run to narrow their deficit to one, 39-38. Ben Temrowski (Rochester, Mich.) powered the scoring run connecting on 3 three-point baskets and hitting two free throws for 11 of the 18 points. Rockford and Edgewood traded baskets to end the half as RU took a 48-46 lead into the half. Leading Rockford at the half were Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) and Ben Temrowski with 11 points each. Rockford shot 51.3% and Edgewood shot 47.1% in the first half.
The second half began with both teams trading baskets for the first five minutes. Rockford had the narrow edge 60-56 with just over 14 minutes to play. The Regents began to open the game up a bit taking the lead 68-58 as Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) began to assert himself scoring 6 points in the first eight minutes of the second half. After Rockford had expanded their lead to 76-62 Edgewood was able to creep back into the game trailing 78-73 with six minutes remaining in the game. However, the Regents would not allow them to get any closer, winning by the final of 99-86. Rockford shot 53.6% and Edgewood shot 45.5% from the floor for the game.
Leading the Regents were Zach Wallace scoring a team-high 22 points, 20 coming in the second half, and grabbing 8 rebounds. Ben Weber (South Beloit, Ill.) added 18 points, 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Trae Blumhorst (Mendota, Ill.) recorded 16 points with 8 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals. Tony Diemer tallied a double-double scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Arthell Rosquist (Zion, Ill.) posted 12 points with 8 rebounds and 3 assists. Ben Temrowski had 11 points, all in the first half, including 3 three-point baskets.
The Rockford University men's basketball team returns to action Saturday, February 11 to take on Marian University in Fond du Lac, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 4:15 p.m.
