Falcons Soar Past Regents

ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University men's basketball team returned to action today to take on Concordia University Wisconsin in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Falcons came into the game in third place in the NACC. The Regents were sitting in seventh place and poised to earn a crucial home victory looking to sweep the season series against the Falcons. Ultimately, Concordia was able to shoot their way past Rockford, draining 13 three-point baskets, en route to a 100-83 victory.

In the opening half, CUW was able to jump out to an early 11-4 lead with 16:14 remaining in the half. The deficit was six points before RU went on a quick 8-2 scoring run, to knot the game at 24 with 9:31 remaining in the half. Ben Weber (South Beloit, Ill.) hit back-to-back three-point baskets to power the run. Unfortunately, over the next minute, the Falcons responded with an 8-0 run to push their lead to 32-24. The deficit remained about the same for the rest of the second half as Rockford trailed 48-40 at halftime. Leading the Regents in the half were Ben Weber and Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) with 11 points each. Rockford shot 44.4% and Concordia shot 47.6% from the floor in the half.

Opening up the second half, CUW jumped out to a 61-42 lead, due to a 13-2 run over the first three minutes of the half. The closest the Regents would get the rest of the way was 14 points, as the Falcons responded to every blow they threw at them. The largest deficit Rockford had was 20 points as the game was very even after the early scoring spurt from Concordia in the second half. Ultimately, RU fell by the final of 100-83. The Regents shot 47.1% and the Falcons shot 46.3% from the floor. However, Concordia made 13 three-point baskets compared to Rockford's 8. 

Leading the Regents were Tony Diemer posting a double-double of 21 points with 10 rebounds. Diemer also added 3 assists. Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) recorded his 15th double-double of the season scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Wallace also blocked a game-high 5 shots. Ben Weber added 19 points with 4 rebounds, including 5 three-point baskets. Trae Blumhorst (Mendota, Ill.) totaled 12 points with 6 assists, 4 rebounds and 3 steals. 

The Rockford University men's basketball team returns to action Wednesday, January 25 to take on #19 Benedictine University at the Seaver Center with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
