RIVER FOREST, Ill. - The Rockford University men's basketball team won its second straight game Tuesday night with a 94-84 victory over the Concordia University Chicago Cougars. The game was close in the opening moments as there were 8 ties and 7 lead changes in the first 11 minutes. However, from the 9:01 mark on in the first half, the Regents never trailed as they began to seize control of the game. Rockford would build its lead up to as many as 20 points in the second half before ultimately holding off a late Cougar charge for the victory.
Both teams got off to a hot start in the beginning of the first half, and consquently neither team was able to gain any separation. However with 9:40 remaining before halftime, Rockford used a 10-0 run to begin to take control. Senior Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) dominated the Cougars during that span scoring 8 straight points to give Rockford a 34-26 lead. Freshman Ben Weber (South Beloit, Ill.) then caught fire from the floor scoring the next seven Rockford points as the Regents pushed their lead to double-digits for the first time in the game. The lead would balloon to as many as 16 points in the half as the Regents entered halftime with a 52-36 advantage.
Rockford was in control for the majority of the second half extending their lead to as many as 20 points with 11:06 remaining in the game. Again it was Zach Wallace who led the charge, scoring 10 straight points to put his team in front 74-54. However the game was far from over as CUC used a 16-3 run later in the half to pull back within 6 points at 86-80 with 2:04 remaining. Fortunately Rockford was able to make enough free throws down to the stretch to hold of the Cougars and pick up the 94-84 win.
Senior Zach Wallace continues to be an unstoppable force for Rockford as he recorded his second straight 30-point, 20-rebound game. It was also his tenth double-double of the season and his sixth in the team's last seven games. He finished with a game-high 31 points, 20 rebounds and 3 blocks. With just eight games remaining, Wallace currently leads the NACC in both scoring (21.1 ppg) and rebounding (11.7 rpg).
Sophomore Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) and freshman Ben Weber both scored over 20 points to help lead the Regents to victory. Weber scored 21 points making 5-of-9 three-pointers and grabbed 7 rebounds. Diemer had 22 points, 6 assists and 5 rebounds. Diemer has been red-hot as of late and is now the second leading scorer in the NACC (20.0 ppg) and the sixth leading rebounder (8.2 rpg).
The RU men's basketball team returns to the court on Saturday, January 21 at home against Concordia University Wisconsin. Tip-off is set for 4:15 PM in the Seaver Center.
