ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University men's basketball team returned to action today to take on Concordia University Chicago in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents were looking to right the ship after two tough losses to NACC opponents. Rockford absolutely lit the nets on fire in the game shooting 55.6% from the field and 48.0% from three-point territory. With the Regents hot-shooting they flew past the Cougars by the final of 107-83.
In the first half both teams traded baskets for the first eleven minutes of the game, as Rockford's largest lead was five points, until Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) hit a three-point basket to increase the lead to seven points, 33-26, with 8:01 remaining. With 3:26 remaining in the half the Regents lead remained at seven points. However, Rockford finished the half on a 14-6 run to push their lead to 15 points, 58-43, at halftime. Leading the Regents in the half was Diemer scoring 20 points with 9 rebounds and 6 assists. Rockford shot 56.8% from the field and shot 8-of-13, 61.5%, from three-point land.
In the first ten minutes of the final half Rockford extended their lead off of a 35-16 run to balloon the lead to 34 points. Ben Weber (South Beloit, Ill.) hit a three-point basket to give the Regents the 93-59 lead. The Regents increased their lead to as much as 38 points. Rockford eventually prevailed by the final of 107-83. Rockford connected on 12 three-point baskets, which is their most in a game this season.
Sophomore Tony Diemer led the Regents scoring 26 points, grabbing 13 rebounds and dishing out 11 assists in 30 minutes. He is the first Rockford player to record a triple-double since the school joined the NACC in 2006. Diemer has now scored 20+ points in three straight games.
Also leading the Regents for the game were Ben Weber posting 20 points with 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Trae Blumhorst (Mendota, Ill.) added 20 points, on 9-of-11 shooting, with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) recorded a double-double scoring 18 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Ben Temrowski (Rochester, Mich.) tallied 12 points, on 4-of-7 shooting from three-point land.
The Rockford University men's basketball team returns to action Saturday, January 7 to take on Edgewood College in Madison, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 4:15 p.m.
