BELOIT, Wis. - The RU men's basketball team won its second straight game on Thursday with a 84-80 road victory over the Beloit College Buccaneers. Rockford used a quick start to grab an early lead and then never relinquished it. One of the keys to the Regents' success as of late has been their much improved shooting. Rockford made over 50% of its shots for the second straight game and for the third time in the team's last four games, all three of which were wins.
The Regents came roaring out of the gates in the first half draining four of its first five shots to grab a quick 8-2 lead. Rockford continued to build on its advantage over the next five minutes extending the lead to at the time a game-high 12 points. Senior Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) and freshman Kivontay Shaw (Galesburg, Ill.) each scored 6 points in the opening seven and a half minutes to help put the Regents out in front 23-11. However, the Bucs methodically began to chip away until they were able to get back within four points at 40-36 heading into halftime.
The second half followed a near identical pattern as the first with the Regents again pushing their lead to double-digits only to see the Bucs close the gap in the final moments. Rockford used a 23-12 run over the first ten plus minutes of the half to take a 63-48 lead. Six different Regents scored during that run led by Wallace's 9 points. Rockford appeared to be headed to an easy win as the Regents still maintained a double-digit lead with just under four minutes remaining. However, the Buccaneers scorched the nets over the next three minutes with a 12-3 run to make it a one-possession game at 76-74 with 1:06 remaining. Fortunately Rockford was able to stymie the Buccaneers' momentum by connecting on its final two shot attempts and all four of its free throws to seal the 84-80 win.
RU senior forward Zach Wallace continues to be a force offensively. Wallace hit the 20-point plateau for the fifth time already this season scoring 25 points on an impressive 12-of-15 shooting performance. He also added 9 rebounds and 2 blocks to his totals.
Freshman Kivontay Shaw followed up his game-winning three-pointer on Saturday with his best performance of the season. Shaw drained 7 of his 10 shot attempts including going a perfect 4-for-4 from long range to score a season-high 21 points. He rounded out his evening with 7 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 block.
Arthell Rosquist (Zion, Ill.) was the final Regent to crack double-figures in scoring. Rosquist tallied 13 points, 5 assists and 3 rebounds.
The RU men's basketball team will play its final game for two weeks on Saturday at home against Wisconsin Lutheran College. Tip-off is set for 4:15 PM in the Seaver Center.
