ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University men's basketball team returned to action today to take on Marian University, after their four-game road trip, in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents were playing their third game in five days against tough competition. Rockford went on the road and knocked off first-place Concordia University Wisconsin for their first NACC victory of the season. Rockford earned their second victory of the season with a game winning three-point basket in double overtime with .09 seconds remaining to win by the final of 98-96.
To begin the first half the Regents jumped out to an early 10-4 lead when Tony Diemer (Rockford, Ill.) made a layup with 16:19 remaining. Rockford then jumped out to their largest lead of the half, thanks to a 9-0 run, when Diemer made another layup to increase the lead to 10 points, 23-13. The Sabres closed out the half strong and took the lead 36-34 into the half. Diemer led the team offensively scoring 10 points with 6 rebounds. The Regents have outshot the Sabres 48% to 38% from the field. However, Rockford has had 11 turnovers compared to Marian's 3.
Marian opened up a seven point lead early in the second half with 19 minutes remaining in the half. Rockford began to chip away at the Marian lead and eventually took a three point lead off of a Zach Wallace (Rockford, Ill.) layup with just over 13 minutes remaining. Both teams traded baskets for much of the second half as the largest lead for either team in the final 13 minutes was five points. The Sabres made two free throws with two seconds remaining in the second half to force the game into overtime with the score of 78-78.
In the first overtime both teams struggled to hit any shots. Rockford took the early 80-78 lead before each team traded baskets with the period ending in another tie 84-84. Marian, once again, made two free throws to force the second overtime. In the second overtime, the Sabres gained the lead by four points with only 2:30 remaining in the period. The Regents ended the period on a 12-6 run to seal the victory by the final of 98-96. Freshman Kivontay Shaw (Galesburg, Ill.) hit the biggest shot of his young career with a three-point basket with .09 seconds remaining in the overtime. Junior Arthell Rosquist (Zion, Ill.) led Rockford in the second half with 14 points and 4 assists.
Leading the Regents for the day were Arthell Rosquist recording a double-double scoring a season-high 24 with 11 assists and 2 rebounds. Tony Diemer posted a double-double with 21 points and 13 rebounds. Zach Wallace tallied 21 points with 8 rebounds and a season-high 7 blocks. Kivontay Shaw added 14 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 blocks off the bench. Freshman Ben Weber (Rockford, Ill.) hit two huge three-point baskets in the second overtime to keep pace with the Sabres.
The Rockford University men's basketball team will return to action Thursday, December 15 to take on Beloit College in Beloit, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 7 p.m.
