ALBION, Mich. - The Rockford University football team took a break from its NACC schedule on Saturday as the Regents traveled East to face the Albion College Britons. This was the first ever meeting between the two schools as it is just the seventeenth season of football for Rockford.
It was a difficult day for Rockford as the Regents got off to a sluggish start. Albion scored on each of its first four possessions to jump out to a commanding 28-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Britons would extend their lead to 35-0 in the second quarter before Rockford was able to find the end zone. The RU score was set up by the defense as Jared Johnson (Miami, Fla.) intercepted a pass and returned it to the Albion 11-yard line. Three plays later, quarterback Andrew Perez (West Covina, Calif.) found Mar Sean Vercher (Chicago, Ill.) for an 11-yard touchdown as the Regents entered halftime trailing 35-7.
The second half followed an identical pattern to the first with Albion scoring the first 28 points before Rockford scored the final 13. The Regents second score of the game came midway through the fourth quarter on 9-play, 72-yard drive. Rockford ran the ball 7 times on that drive led by Chance Manning (Durand, Ill.) who accounted for 30 yards on 4 carries. However, the big play came through the air as Perez connected with Joe Breeden (Burlington, Ill.) on fourth and ten for a 42-yard touchdown. The Regents would score their final touchdown of the game on their very next possession, driving the ball 79 yards on 9 plays. Rockford methodically worked its way down the field using its passing game and eventually found the end zone on an 8-yard touchdown pass from Perez to Kalan Miller (Cordova, Tenn.). However, it was not enough as Rockford fell by a final score of 63-20.
The Regents again used a balanced offensive attack running and passing the ball 37 times each. Rockford also dominated the time of possession holding the ball for 40:19 compared to just 19:41 for Albion. Quarterback Andrew Perez led the Rockford passing attack completing 15-of-25 passes for 202 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mar Sean Vercher hauled in a team-high 7 receptions for 54 yards and 1 touchdown. Joe Breeden caught 4 passes for a team-high 66 yards and 1 score. Kalan Miller finished with 3 receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown. Running back Chance Manning narrowly missed his fourth 100-yard rushing performance of the season as he carried the ball 17 times for 97 yards and averaged 5.7 yards per carry. He also caught 1 pass for 10 yards. Manning has put together an excellent season to this point as he is second in the NACC in rushing yards (719), fifth in yards per carry (5.1) and tied for fifth in rushing touchdowns (4).
The RU football team hits the road again next Saturday, November 5 to face NACC foe Concordia University Wisconsin. Kickoff is set for 1:00 PM.
