Jones and Smith Voted Second Team All-NACC

ROCKFORD, Ill. - The Rockford University baseball team had a pair of players receive all-conference recognition from the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference on Thursday morning. Sophomore pitcher Zachary Jones (Rockford, Ill.) and senior shortstop Austin Smith (Peru, Ill.) were both voted Second Team all NACC. This marks the first time either has received NACC postseason honors.

Sophomore starting pitcher Zachary Jones earned Second Team All-NACC recognition in his first year in the Regents' starting rotation. Jones steadily worked his way to the top of the Rockford rotation, and at the end of the season, led the Regents and was in the top-10 in the NACC in nearly every major statistical category. The right-hander finished the year with a 7-1 record, which is the second most wins in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference and is just one win shy of tying the Rockford University single-season wins record. Jones also finished third in the NACC in strikeouts per nine innings (10.33), fifth in earned run average amongst pitchers with at least eight starts (2.67), sixth in strikeouts (62) and ninth in innings pitched (54.0).

Shortstop Austin Smith was also named Second Team All-NACC after an outstanding senior season. Smith hit out of the cleanup spot in the lineup the entire year and was a key component to the Rockford offense. He finished the 2018 season at or near the top of every major hitting category for the Regents and was in the top-6 in the NACC in five categories. At the end of the regular season, Smith is tied for fourth in RBIs (33), fifth in runs scored (34), and tied for sixth in hits (51), doubles (12) and at bats (152).

The Rockford University baseball team finished the 2018 season tied for sixth place in the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference with an 11-9 record in conference play.
