ROCKFORD, Ill.- The Rockford University baseball team returned to action today to take on Marian University in a Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference matchup. The Regents were looking for a nice bounce back after two tough losses on Saturday. Rockford was able to capture the win in game one by the final of 9-4, but dropped the second game 8-4.
Marian was able to take advantage of a Rockford error in the first inning to take an early 1-0 lead. In the second inning the Regents responded by taking advantage of a Sabres error. Rockford scored three runs after the error. The scoring began when Austin Smith (Peru, Ill.) scored from second base when an errant throw went over the third basemen's head allowing him to advance two bases. Next, Nathan Burris (Oglesby, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to right field to plate Mitchell Gorsuch (Cherry Valley, Ill.) from third base. The final run came when Chris Carlson (Schaumburg, Ill.) hit an RBI groundout to second base to bring in Patrick O'Malley (Elk Grove, Ill.). Rockford took the 3-1 lead.
After the Sabres added another run to narrow the deficit to 3-2, the Regents tacked on four more runs in the sixth inning. The scoring began when Bryce Hinkelman (Ottawa, Ill.) scored on another errant throw from Marian. Next, Britton Seivert (Rockford, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to center field to drive in Smith. Next, Burris hit an RBI single to drive in Gorsuch. The final run came when Carlson hit another RBI groundout to plate O'Malley. Marian was able to add two more runs but Rockford tacked on two more to give the Regents the win by the final of 9-4.
Pitching in game one was Joseph Valdez (Tucson, Ariz.) who threw 7 innings allowing 4 runs, 2 earned, on 5 hits while striking out 5. Valdez moved to 3-1 with the solid outing. Christian Pearcy (Tucson, Ariz.) threw the final 2 innings allowing only 1 hit while striking out 2. Pearcy earned his first collegiate save with the great effort.
In game two, the Sabres hopped out to a 4-0 lead, capitalizing on a Regent error. Rockford responded with their own run in the second inning when Seivert hit an RBI single to drive in Hinkelman. RU had narrowed the deficit to 4-1. The Sabres answered with three more runs in the third inning to increase their lead to 7-1.
The Regents added two more runs in the fifth inning when they had their best scoring opportunity of the game with the bases-loaded and nobody out. The scoring began when Josh Bergbreiter (Elk Grove, Ill.) drew a walk to bring in the first run of the inning. Next, Logemann got hit by a pitch to bring in another run. Unfortunately, the Regents could not add any other runs, but narrowed the deficit to 7-3. Both teams added one more run the rest of the game as Rockford fell by the final of 8-4.
Starting on the mound was Ben Kolkmeyer (Belvidere, Ill.) who lasted two innings before giving way to Spencer Lentz (Stillman Valley, Ill.). Lentz threw 3 innings allowing only 1 run, 0 earned. Following Lentz was Zachary Jones (Rockford, Ill.) who was equally as impressive throwing 3 innings allowing 1 run, 0 earned, on only 1 hit. Joe Preston (Touhy, Neb.) completed the final inning for Rockford.
Leading the Regents offensively was Cole Logemann who went 4-for-9 with an RBI. Bryce Hinkelman went 3-for-10 with a home run, four runs scored and an RBI. Austin Smith added three hits on the day and two runs scored.
The RU baseball team returns to action Saturday, April 8 to take on Wisconsin Lutheran College in Milwaukee, Wis. with a scheduled start time of 12 p.m.
