GREENCASTLE, Ind. - The Rockford University baseball team hit the road on Saturday for its first true road game of the season against the DePauw University Tigers. Unfortunately it was a difficult day for the Regents as the Tigers were in control nearly the entire way and ultimately won by a final score of 13-4.
The game got off to a rough start as the Tigers scored a trio of runs in the bottom of the first inning to jump out to a quick 3-0 lead. DePauw used three hits, took advantage of three walks and a Rockford error to score the runs. However, Rockford did a good job of limiting the damage to just three runs as the Tigers left the bases loaded to end the inning.
After a scoreless second and third inning, the Regents put together a three-run fourth tie the game. Following two quick outs, senior Austin Smith (Peru, Ill.) got the RU rally started by lacing a double into right field. Mitchell Gorsuch (Cherry Valley, Ill.) then drew a walk to keep the inning alive and put runners on first and second with two outs. One batter later, junior Chris Carlson (Schaumburg, Ill.) belted his first collegiate home run to tie the game at 3-3.
Unfortunately the game would not stay tied for long as the Tigers scored eight runs over the next three innings to take a commanding 11-3 lead. DePauw used three hits and again took advantage of a pair of Rockford walks to score three runs of their own in the bottom half of the fourth. Two innings later the Tigers essentially put the game out of reach scoring five runs off five hits to extend their lead to 11-3.
The Regents would continue to fight and battle as they scratched across one final run in the top half of the seventh. Chris Carlson began the inning with a leadoff double and then stole third to put himself in scoring position with no one out. Three batters later, senior Cole Logemann (Lena, Ill.) came through with a clutch two-out RBI single, scoring Carlson and pulling Rockford back to within seven. However, it was not enough as the Tigers answered right back with single runs in the seventh and eighth innings en route to a 13-4 victory.
At the plate Rockford was led by the duo of Chris Carlson and Cole Logemann. Carlson continued his offensive onslaught as of late with his second straight multi-hit performance. The junior went 2-for-3 with a home run, a double, two runs scored and three runs driven in. He is now hitting a team-high .533 on the season with a 1.000 slugging percentage, 4 doubles, a home run and 5 RBIs in just 15 at bats. Logemann was the other Regent to record a multi-hit day going 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The RU baseball team looks to get back on track tomorrow when it wraps up its three-game series at DePauw University. First pitch of the doubleheader is slated for 11:00 AM Central Time.
