FORT MYERS, Fla.- The Rockford University baseball team concluded their spring trip Wednesday against Swarthmore College. The Regents struggled early on committing a plethora of errors. However, their hitting led a comeback that unfortunately fell just short. Rockford fell by the final of 8-6.
The Regents got on the board first when Cole Logemann (Lena, Ill.) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Josh Bergbreiter (Elk Grove, Ill.) from third base. Swarthmore was able to respond by scoring six unanswered runs to take a 6-1 lead off of seven Rockford errors in the first three innings. The next scoring opportunity for the Regents came in the fourth inning when Chris Carlson (Schaumburg, Ill.) roped an RBI double to the right field fence to drive in Jose Miranda (Yuma, Ariz.) from first base. The run narrowed the deficit to 6-2.
After Swarthmore added runs in the fourth and fifth inning to expand their advantage to 8-2, Rockford began their furious comeback. In the seventh inning, the Regents added three runs to narrow their deficit to 8-5. The runs came when Britton Seivert (Rockford, Ill.) drilled a two-run double down the left field line to plate Patrick O'Malley (Elk Grove, Ill.) and Carlson. Following Seivert, was Brett Down (Princeville, Ill.) who hit an RBI single into center field to drive in Seivert. After Rockford held Swarthmore scoreless the next two innings, they added another run in the ninth inning to bring the score to 8-6. The run came when Logemann hit an RBI groundout to bring in Down. Unfortunately, The Regents were unable to do any more damage, falling by the final of 8-6.
Starting on the mound was Joseph Valdez (Tucson, Ariz.). Valdez was unlucky due to some errors but did not have his best stuff only lasting 3 innings before giving way to Dalton Morris (Somonauk, Ill.). Morris threw the next 3 innings allowing only 1 run. Joe Preston (Touhy, Neb.) and Zachary Jones (Rockford, Ill.) combined to finish the game for the Regents.
Offensively leading Rockford was Chris Carlson going a perfect 4-for-4 with two doubles and an RBI. Britton Seivert went 2-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI's. Nathan Burris (Oglesby, Ill.) entered the game late and went 2-for-2 in his only plate appearances.
