Seven Run Eighth Inning Seals The Victory For Rockford

AUBURNDALE, Fla.- The Rockford University baseball team competed in their second game on the day, taking on Saint Mary's (MN). The Regents and Cardinals played a tightly contested game until the eighth inning when Rockford blew the game open with a seven run inning. The inning gave the Regents an 11-3 advantage. Rockford would not allow another run to ultimately win by the final of 11-3.

In the first inning, the Cardinals were able to take the lead 1-0 with the Regents coming to the plate in the bottom half of the inning. Rockford responded immediately when Josh Bergbreiter (Elk Grove, Ill.) roped a triple to left field to lead it off. Jose Miranda (Yuma, Ariz.) followed him up by hitting an RBI groundout to second base. Cole Logemann (Lena, Ill.) then hit a triple to right-center field with one out in the inning. Austin Smith (Peru, Ill.) brought in Logemann with an RBI ground ball to the shortstop. With Smith's RBI, Rockford took the 2-1 advantage.

The score remained the same until the sixth inning when the Cardinals were able to knot the game up at 2-2. However, the Regents responded in the bottom half of the inning. Logemann scored on a bases loaded wild pitch to give Rockford a 3-2 lead. Tyler Johnson (Chicago, Ill.) had a pinch-hit RBI groundout to the shortstop to plate Austin Smith. The Regents held a 4-2 advantage heading into the seventh inning.

After Saint Mary's tacked on one run to narrow the deficit, Rockford exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning to bust the game wide open. Mitchell Gorsuch (Cherry Valley, Ill.) started the scoring off with an RBI single to plate Smith. Bryce Hinkelman (Ottawa, Ill.) followed him up with a pinch-hit two-run double to drive in Patrick O'Malley (Elk Grove, Ill.) and Gorsuch. Bergbreiter then came up and hit a two-run single to bring in Hinkelman and Dalvin Ramos (Chicago, Ill.) to extend the lead to 9-3. Logemann capped off the inning with a shot over the left field fence for a two-run home run. Rockford would not allow a run in the ninth inning, winning by the final of 11-3.

Starting on the mound for the Regents was Thomas Bolen (Tucson, Ariz.). Bolen had a terrific performance throwing 6 innings allowing 2 runs, both earned, on 4 hits while striking out 7. Following Bolen, were freshmen Spencer Lentz (Stillman Valley, Ill.) and Christian Pearcy (Tucson, Ariz.) who made their first collegiate appearances throwing a combined 1 2/3 innings allowing only 1 run. Ben Kolkmeyer (Belvidere, Ill.) rounded out the Regents pitchers by throwing 1 1/3 innings allowing zero hits and striking out three.

Leading the Regents offensively was Cole Logemann who went 2-for-4 with a triple and a two-run home run. Josh Bergbreiter went 2-for-5 with a triple and a two-run single. Patrick O'Malley recorded two hits and one walk.

RU returns to action tomorrow, March 4, to take on Coast Guard Academy with a scheduled start time of 11 p.m. CST. in Fort Myers, Fla.
